Diseases gynecology and senology

Our main focus is the treatment of breast diseases, especially breast cancer.

Treatment breast cancer

The treatment of breast cancer includes many different treatment options. The kind and order of treatment options has to be evaluated individually to meet your needs. The following treatment options are used to fight breast cancer:

  • surgery
  • drugs
    • chemotherapy
    • hormone blocking therapy
    • antibody therapy
  • radiation

Symptoms breast cancer

Breast cancer often does not cause any pain, which differs from benign breast diseases like cysts, inflammations or lipoma being painful and often sensitive to pressure. The breast should be examined while standing and lying. Changes of the breast tissue like pulled in skin or protrusions are often diagnosed best with raised arms. If the skin is wet, a tumor can be felt well, and that is why self-examining the breast under the shower with soap is recommended.

A sign of a precancerous condition of the breast can also be the one-sided discharge of a fluid out of one nipple. The female breast is sensitive and changes during the menstrual cycle. As a result, nodes may not be felt after the menstruation. If a change of breast tissue persists longer than 4-6 weeks, you should consult a doctor.

Symptoms of breast cancer at a glance

  • nodes, lumps, tumors
  • reddening
  • swelling
  • pulled in skin
  • one-sided discharge of fluid
  • recently emerged pulled in nipple
  • recently emerged deformity

Causes breast cancer

Like many other types of cancer, the causes of developing breast cancer are unclear, but risk factors are:

  • previous breast cancer in your own medical history
  • breast cancer in the medical history of your family
  • mutation of the genes BRCA1/BRCA2
  • ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS, cancer of the milk ducts), lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS, cancer of the lobules) in your own medical history
  • fibrocystic breast changes (benign), typical or atypical
  • menarche (first menstruation) before 12
  • nullipara (no births)/late fist birth (> 30)
  • obesity, smoking, alcohol
  • diabetes
  • oligomenorrhea (infrequent, rare menstruation)
  • thick breast tissue diagnosed during mammography

Diagnostics breast cancer

The best way to detect breast cancer at an early stage is to combine different examination procedures. Like a mosaic, every diagnostic means adds a new piece to complete the image.

  • self-examination of the breast
  • specialist examination
  • mammography
  • breast ultrasound
  • if necessary, MR mammography

Every single type of examination answer another question. Only the X-ray examination of the female breast (mammography/digital breast tomosynthesis) is scientifically proven to detect breast cancer at an early stage and to reduce mortality.
