title=\"MRI\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betaklinik.de\/en\/specialties\/neuroradiology-and-pediatric-neuroradiology\/mri\/\">MRI<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"CT\" Whereas it is not necessary to give a contrast agent during\u00a0MR\u00a0myelography, it is in case of using a CT\u00a0or\u00a0angiography\u00a0device. During myelography, the spinal cord is examined by magnet resonance technique\u00a0given\u00a0MR\u00a0myelography, or by<a title=\"X-raying\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betaklinik.de\/en\/specialties\/neuroradiology-and-pediatric-neuroradiology\/x-raying\/\">\u00a0X-ray<\/a>\u00a0technique given\u00a0CT\u00a0or\u00a0<a title=\"Angiography\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betaklinik.de\/en\/specialties\/neuroradiology-and-pediatric-neuroradiology\/angiography\/\">angiographic<\/a>\u00a0myelography.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Indication myelography: when is myelography performed?<\/h2><p>Angiographic\u00a0myelograhpy is performed in case\u00a0the examination of the spinal cord cannot take place in\u00a0MRI\u00a0or\u00a0CT\u00a0systems, or if the spinal cord cannot be sufficiently examined by them.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>How is myelography carried out?<\/h2><p>Prior to myelography, it should be assessed if patients suffer from an allergy to a contrast agent or a disease\/illness that makes myelography difficult or impossible to carry out, or if a patient\u00b4s medication may manipulate the outcome of myelography. A few hours prior to the examination, patients should neither eat nor drink. At the beginning of myelography, the back or neck is disinfected and a thin needle is placed at height of the iliac crest or the first\/second cervical vertebral body, depending on the area to be examined. If placed correctly, cerebrospinal fluid comes out. Then a contrast agent is injected into the spinal cord. Afterwards, the needle is removed. Now several X-ray\u00a0images in different body positions are made in order to evaluate how the contrast agent spreads out. At the end of myelography, the small wound is sterilely covered.
