Prof. Dr. med. Michael Sabel is a specialized neuro-oncological neurosurgeon and served as the Head of the Neuro-Oncology Center at the University Hospital Düsseldorf for over 14 years. With more than 3,000 brain tumor surgeries as the lead surgeon and 1,200 awake craniotomies, he is among the most experienced neuro-oncological neurosurgeons in Europe. His work focuses on supramarginal resection of infiltrating brain tumors, prioritizing functional preservation. To achieve this, he has established cutting-edge methods for intraoperative mapping and monitoring, with a particular emphasis on improving language mapping in close collaboration with Professor Grodzinsky (Jerusalem, Israel).

Professor Sabel is deeply committed to neuro-oncological education, having developed multiple surgical training programs for brain tumor resection and authored three specialist books on the subject. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles (current H-index: 58). As the principal investigator, he leads the prospective randomized GlioVAX trial, which explores the role of dendritic cell-based vaccines in glioblastoma patients. Additionally, Professor Sabel is a member of the EU-funded GLIOMATCH consortium.
